Patty turned sixty-two in January, and her husband took a photo of the two of us at the birthday dinner. When it came around on his phone I did what I always do, which is look at myself first. The light from the window had caught my cheeks and they looked flaky. The age spot on my left cheek stood out. I am fifty-nine, I have fair skin that runs dry, and nothing on my face has ever been treated, injected, lasered or peeled. That photo is the only reason I started paying attention.

Before that, my moisturizer was whatever was on the shelf at the drugstore, and I never read the back of a jar. Olay was a name I had walked past for thirty years without once thinking about it. Then in February I started reading labels, mostly because my skin had turned thinner and drier and I wanted to know what I was putting on it. I bought one thing at a time, on Amazon, the week I started using it, and I have kept to that.

A fingertip lifting face cream from an open jar on a bathroom counter.

Olay Regenerist Micro-Sculpting Cream was the moisturizer I landed on, and it is the only one I have used since. It is a cream in a jar, 1.7 ounces, for face and neck. The label lists niacinamide, peptides and hyaluronic acid, and the listing says it suits all skin types, including dry and mature. I am not a woman who can evaluate a peptide. I can tell you what my face did.

Here is the honest report. Within about two weeks my cheeks stopped feeling tight after I washed them. That is a small sentence, and it was the first change I noticed from anything I put on my face this year. My lines around my eyes and my mouth look about the same as they did in January. The spot on my left cheek is still there. If you want a cream that takes ten years off, this is not that, and I would be lying if I said otherwise.

One jar, morning and night. I wash with a plain gentle cleanser, pat my face dry, and work a small amount upward over my face and neck. In the morning it goes on after my vitamin C and my eye cream, and my sunscreen goes on last, over the top of everything. At night it is the final step, after the retinol has had a few minutes to absorb. It lives on the top shelf of the medicine cabinet in the upstairs bathroom, and I have not changed that order since the first week.

Within about two weeks my cheeks stopped feeling tight after I washed them. That is the whole result, and it was enough to keep me going.

Nine months in, my cheeks are still comfortable

The label promises more than I saw. Firming in a week. Improved wrinkles. That language is on the jar and I did not get it, so I am not going to repeat it back to you as though I did. What I got was moisture that held through a Spokane winter, which for dry cheeks was the real problem in the first place. My skin looks less tired when it is not flaking. That is the part I noticed.

A woman in her late fifties sitting at a kitchen table with a mug, morning light coming through the window.

Two things I do not love. It is a jar, so my fingers go into it twice a day, and I know that is not the cleanest arrangement. And in July and August it feels heavy on my skin, so I use about half as much and I go lighter on my neck. If your skin runs oily, I would start somewhere else and not with this.

A moisturizer is not a plan by itself. The sunscreen I put over it every morning matters more than the cream does, and the retinol I use on alternate nights is the thing that has slowly changed how my skin feels to the touch. Olay is the layer that keeps my cheeks comfortable while the rest of it works. That is a smaller job than the jar advertises, and it is the job I needed done.

What I'd Tell You If We Were Sitting at My Kitchen Table

I would tell you that the photo at Patty's birthday was not a crisis and this cream is not a cure. I would tell you to buy one jar, use it morning and night for a month, and judge it on one question: does your face feel comfortable after you wash it? If your cheeks are still tight at four weeks, it is not the right cream for you, and knowing that costs you nothing but the month.

I would also tell you to put sunscreen over it, every morning, clouds included. That is the piece I wish I had started at forty instead of at fifty-nine. And if something on your face is changing in a way that worries you, a spot that is new or getting larger, that is a dermatologist's appointment and not a jar. I keep one skin check a year, and I would keep that appointment before I kept any cream.
